As animals essentially become a part of the family, the loss of a pet can be devastating. As part of a veterinary staff, it’s important to know what to do in order to support and console a grieving client. Assisi Animal Health offers four tips for vets who are supporting a grieving client:

1. Find a quiet environment. Disclosing bad news to a client is a personal matter that should not be taken lightly. Before discussing any potentially upsetting information, lead the client to a safe space where they can express emotion in privacy and collect themselves before leaving the facility.

2. Provide a list of support options. Compile a list of reputable support groups, grief helplines, and internet resources to give to the client in their time of need. Ensure that your grieving clients know your office staff is available to address any relevant questions or concerns.

3. Be a good listener. The best method of assistance in this case is to simply lend an ear and a shoulder to cry on. Most pet owners typically share feelings and stories about their lost pet in order to help them move on. It’s vital to provide them with this outlet to help the client heal.

4. Read body language. Not everybody is open to being comforted after a tragedy. Some people do not like to be physically comforted, so it is necessary to watch for open or closed body language. On the other hand, there are people who need to feel closeness, so a hug or hand on the shoulder can be significantly helpful.
