Do you cry, too, when you see commercials like Subaru’s? You know the one, a commercial for a car that’s all about a guy, his 14 ¾ year-old dog, and a bucket list. Oh my! In fact, I just watched it again for the sake of this article, and bawled my eyes out, yet again. Set to Willie Nelson music, the subtleties of the love this guy has in doing everything for his buddy, his 14 ¾ year-old buddy, is too much for a pet-loving heart to bear! The bucket list of tennis balls, an old girlfriend, selfies, the beach, eating in bed, and so much more. The commercial is chock full of such love, sometimes I have to really remember what they are trying to advertise!
I love researching why companies use animals in their advertising. Interestingly enough, while we all love to see a cute little puppy or kitty doing what they do best, being cute, it’s really more about us as humans. Not that everyone gets animals and the human-animal bond, for 65% of our country, we get it. Therefore, when you are creating a marketing message, appealing to 65% of the population of anything are good odds in getting your message across.
In 2012, it was reported that animals officially outnumbered babies in Super Bowl ads. Our society was changing, Baby Boomers had new children now, the pets, and Millennials were trying on being parents, with the animals. And, let’s face it, as USA Today reported in 2012, pooches just act like nice people. We can relate to them. In fact, we want to be like them. Their ability for unconditional love. For forgiveness. They’re just amazing. It’s no surprise that we all look up from whatever we’re doing to see these loves on the screen!
So back to that Subaru commercial, we’re fascinated by these Bucket Lists. Have you done one? We’re curious…. Oh, and if you need to watch the commercial for some inspiration on what yours might look like, here you go: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-wXT1t5FTE.
