Today, we remember.
As we sit on the eve of the long Memorial Day weekend, whether you’re traveling, or spending time with family and friends, we can take time to remember those who have been a part of our lives.
Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, started out as a time to pay tribute to those men and women serving our country. When I was growing up, this was a reverent weekend with small town parades and time spent visiting every cemetery that held a special family member. We “decorated” those graves with flowers, a can of beer, a cigarette, a penny or a rock, and a special toy for the children who had passed. At each grave we either shared a memory or asked our parents about the history of the deceased. For just a moment on this special weekend, we remembered.
What an honor it is for pet lovers to remember those animals who have served our country and in our communities. For the working dogs everywhere, thank you. Thank you for the time you gave, and for the sacrifices you made for us all.
For many of us, while our animals are not in active service, they surely fulfill our needs for unconditional love and companionship. This particular week we hold close the family of Mama Dog, a beautiful basset hound who brought so much joy to her human family. She fought the good fight and finally found peace in eternal sleep. This week, her family and friends came together in a beautifully designed service to honor her and what she meant to each and every one of them. RIP, Mama Dog.
Finally, to all of the special creatures who have forever touched our human souls, thank you for everything. Thank you for the lessons of life, love and loss. We are forever grateful.
