Why I Will ALWAYS Have A Pet
By Nadia Barkett
Ever since I was a little girl we always shared our home with animals. I grew up in the Caribbean, so that basically meant we always had a dog, a few chickens, the occasional goat and some cats. When we relocated to
Canada, the first pet I had was a chicken…shortly after taking this “chicken” into our home, we realized it was actually a rooster. The 4 a.m. wakeup calls were a bit of a hint and we decided it was best for Charlie the chicken to live out his days on a farm.
The only reason I remembered rushing home as a kid was for my fur-babies because they were the best greeters. Having a dog around the house always kept my mother and I healthy and happy. We were always pretty active so our evenings were filled with long walks, which was great for the pup, followed by cuddles on the couch. My dog was my world and my everything. It was nice to come home and talk to someone who didn’t always have an opinion. He was an AMAZING listener and held no judgement. During my teenage years, I knew he always had my back, even if it felt like the world was going to end.
Some of the most important lessons my mother has taught me has been about animals. She taught us that all creatures, big and small, have a purpose in this great big world. She made sure we knew it was our responsibility to take care of the earth we shared and that meant caring for all creatures.
Flash forward a few years and now I have my own little human. I have someone to share all those life lessons I learned as a child. In just two short years the bond she has built with her pit bull grows strong and stronger by the day. She has developed a sense of responsibility and compassion like no other.
I’ve always felt that pets help to raise children just a bit differently and help adults be better humans. Our family is constantly evolving with each pet. Every life we have brought into our house teaches us different lessons. Strength, love, compassion, and patience are just a few things I have learned from my fur babies, and that’s why I will ALWAYS fill my house with more than just a tiny human.
